Dan Skelton Horses for Cheltenham
Dan Skelton has recorded a number of Cheltenham Festival winners, and it appears he’s on an upward trajectory. The 2024 meeting was a huge highlight for the yard, with the handler having four winners in the form of Unexpected Party, Grey Dawning, Protektorat and Langer Dan. The latter bagged his second successive Coral Cup triumph for the yard.
The New Lion continued the Skelton success story in 2025 when winning the Baring Bingham Novices’ Hurdle, with the trainer likely to enjoy plenty more winners in Festivals to come.
Dan Skelton Horses for the Grand National
Skelton has yet to win a Grand National, although he regularly has horses lining up at the Aintree meeting. Some of his successes include a win for Protektorat in the Manifesto Novices’ Chase in 2021, along with My Drogo winning the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. Dan Skelton didn’t have any entries for the 2025 King George VI Chase and has never won this Boxing Day showdown at Kempton Park. Grey Dawning carried the yard’s hopes in the 2024 renewal before being pulled up at odds of 13/2. It’s likely that the handler will have more entries for the King George in later years as his yard continues to expand.
Dan Skelton Biography
Being the son of the world-famous showjumper Nick Skelton and having learned his trade as assistant trainer to Champion trainer Paul Nicholls, there is little that Dan Skelton doesn’t know about horses.
There were many avenues in the equine world open to him after a childhood spent travelling the world with his father, but being a racehorse trainer was always the dream for a young Dan. The plan from an early age was for Dan himself to train the horses, and younger brother Harry would become the stable jockey.
At the age of 19, Dan would join the powerful yard of Paul Nicholls, who took the inquisitive youngster under his wing and would eventually promote him to be his right-hand man as an assistant trainer.
During his time with Nicholls, Dan would be part of a golden era of horses at the Ditcheat yard, with the likes of Kauto Star, Denman, Masterminded and Big Bucks, among others, winning the majority of top-level races throughout the years.
In 2013, at the age of just 28, Skelton would make the bold decision to stand on his own two feet as a trainer, and with the blessing, and years’ worth of knowledge from Nicholls, he took out his own licence and began training in Warwickshire.
