After having the same head coach for the entire 21^st Century, the New England Patriots will be on to their third head coach in 3 years when the 2025 NFL season begins in September.

After back-to-back 4-13 seasons, New England jettisoned Bill Belichick and, on Sunday, Jerod Mayo. The Patriots moved on from Mayo after just one season, his first as an NFL head coach. 

New England regressed during the season in failing to hit its projected number of wins at 4.5. And in a fitting end to a disastrous season, the Patriots beat the Bills at home in Week 18 and in the process cost themselves the No. 1 overall pick in the April NFL draft. 

Mayo was seen as an interesting hire last January in that he had never been a head coach and was replacing someone in Belichick who is considered among the top NFL coaches of all time. Mayo was close to Kraft personally and was well versed in “The Patriot Way” – or what is left of it in the post-Tom Brady Era. 

Kraft, however, was able to see past his close personal ties to Mayo after the Patriots crumbled on in all three phases. A combination of poor in-game decision-making, sloppy play, and a bereft roster were too much for the first-year coach to survive.

Who's In Line For The Patriots’ Next Head Coach Gig?

Vrabel is a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame. Like Mayo, he remained close to the Kraft Family and has publicly praised the all-important Patriots Brand. Vrabel won 3 Super Bowl rings while playing as a linebacker with New England. Interestingly, Vrabel caught 10 passes while with New England. All 10 catches were touchdowns from Brady. And three occurred during Super Bowls. 

While Vrabel is considered the favorite here – and among many Patriots fans and media elsewhere – the Patriots will be conducting a legit and wide-open coaching search. They have put in a request to interview Lions OC Ben Johnson, in addition to Vrabel. 

Both of those coaching candidates will be coveted elsewhere. The Jets interviewed Vrabel last week. 

One issue here will be whether the Kraft Family wants to bring in another “rookie HC” like Johnson. Another question with the Patriots will ultimately hinge on whether the team selects an offensive-minded HC or a defensive minded one. Vrabel will bring in his own OC, while Johnson will require a defensive coordinator.
