Tua Tagovailoa is officially headed for free agency. The Miami Dolphins announced on Monday that they will release the veteran quarterback after the new league year begins on March 11, using a post-June 1 designation.

The decision leaves the Dolphins with an NFL record $99.2 million dead money salary cap hit spread over two seasons -- $67.4 million in 2026 and $31.8 million in 2027. With the Dolphins still owing him significant guaranteed money, Tagovailoa can potentially sign a low-cost, short-term deal elsewhere, which should widen his market beyond teams that are desperate for a long-term QB1.
